My music is making it to Bollywood! Shalom, Bollywood, that is--a new film about Jewish women in Indian cinema. Producer and director Danny Ben-Moshe, an award-winning Australian-based filmmaker, (Identity Films), has reached out to me to use tracks from my CD, Hodu: Jewish Rhythms from Baghdad to India, in the documentary.

You can listen to the CD and order it here:

The story of Indian Jewish women in Indian cinema is fascinating.   Jews and Hollywood...a well-known success story. Jews and Bollywood...almost completely unknown.

When Bollywood began a century ago, the notion of female performers was taboo in conservative Indian society. But some Baghdadi women took to the limelight: Sulochana (Ruby Myers), the highest paid actress of the Silent Era and the first female superstar in Indian film; Rose, the glamorous actress who hosted legendary Bollywood parties; Pramila (Esther Abraham) the first Miss India, who starred in the early talkies in the 1930s, and Nadira (Farhah Ezekiel), the quintessential vamp who starred in the post-Independence films of legendary producer/director Raj Kapoor.

SHALOM BOLLYWOOD: THE UNTOLD STORY OF INDIAN CINEMA is a feature length documentary, told in the style and feel of a Bollywood film. It reveals the unknown history of India’s tiny 2000-year-old Jewish community and the female superstars who shaped Bollywood, the world's largest film industry.

Danny is adding Shalom Bollywood to his list of critically acclaimed documentaries covering a range of Jewish & cultural subjects.  Eleven years in the making, Danny is trying to raise the final $20,000 he needs to finish the film.  Donations in the U.S. have tax- deductible status and can be made at http://www.katahdin.org/sponsored/bollywood/contribute.html
